St. Malachy, in fellowship with the Archdiocese of Detroit, holds the protection of the youth in our parish with highest importance. It is our priority to do all that we can do to prevent harm toward children and teens. For this reason, we require all volunteers 18 and older to complete a criminal background check asking for minimal basic information, and all are required to attend a workshop entitled “Protecting God’s Children.” Workshops are held at St. Malachy as well as neighboring parishes. To register for an upcoming workshop, visit Virtus Online. Certificates are only given to attendees who registered for the workshop online.
A similar workshop geared toward instructing teens to be aware of their surroundings is entitled “Called to Serve.” This is required for all teens of the parish that volunteer in any capacity for parish events. Contact the Religious Education Office for more information and to register for the workshop.
There is also a program called “Circle of Grace” which is provided for all children during our regular Family Faith Sharing Program. This is a modified form of the same subject matter for children, different for each grade level.
If you are unsure whether or not you are required to complete a background check and attend the workshop, here are some positions which require this: Catechist, Youth Minister, Eucharistic Minister, Usher, Staff, Parish Nurse, Festival Chairperson(s), Funeral Luncheon Worker, anything related to Vacation Bible Camp, and anything else involving children. All volunteers in any capacity are required to have at least a background check on file, and that includes Lectors, RCIA Volunteers, Parish Council, Finance Council, Christian Service, and Men’s and Women’s Club Officers.
